Testimonials

"My partner and I have two children - two boys, five years and fifteen months.

The major problem we experienced were children who wouldn't sleep through the night and woke up to eight times.

We had difficulties with our first child sleeping from the day he was born. It wasn't until he was twenty months old that we finally sorted out his sleeping problems, with the end result being he slept through the night for the first time in his life. That was after a week with Sheyne observing, counselling and implementing positive routine management.

My second child showed signs of getting into a good groove with his sleeping until he was 6 months old, and then we again experienced lots of night wakings for no apparent reason. After two days with Sheyne, he was sleeping through the night.

Our lives were changed incredibility after each experience and management programme designed by Sheyne. Sleep deprivation plays havoc on all aspects of one's life - from your own sense of worth and ability to cope, to the relationship you have with your children and partner. Everything suffers. Both my partner and I are very grateful that we managed to solve our children's sleeping problems, and equip ourselves through Sheyne's philosophies, to go forward on our own.

Max didn't sleep well from the day he was born. I was given all sorts of excuses through paediatricians, doctors, baby clinic and friends for the course of this problem. At one point through sheer desperation, we admitted him to hospital for observation as we were convinced there was something seriously wrong with him. I also got a priority spot at Tresillian when he eleven weeks old as the baby clinic was quite concerned about the extent of his sleeping problems and what it was doing to me as a new mother.

Eventually when he was around three months old we starting resorting to drugs to try and induce sleep. This didn't work either.

I returned to work when Max was twelve months old, and was faced with the demands of working under the influence of night after night of broken sleep. It was a talking point with my work colleagues "how many times did Max wake last night". Most nights it averaged around six but peaked at eight. My partner and I were growing more and more desperate.

On reflection, we had made lots of typical mistakes e.g. giving him a bottle when he woke, rocking him to sleep, putting him to sleep in the car etc. etc. By this stage his eating was also being impacted by the fact he was having so many bottles during the night. He was also proving to be quite a challenging child during the day as no doubt he was also always tired.

Sheyne came to us when Max was twenty months old. She spent a week with the family. We were encouraged by the results almost immediately. It seemed like a miracle after all we'd been through.

Max slept through the night from that point on.

We have continued to have problems from time to time with Max's sleeping, however I now understand that when troubled his sleeping is effected immediately.

Determined not to make the same mistakes as we did with Max, we implemented many of Sheyne's strategies from the time Alex was born. So we didn't rock him to sleep, we didn't use a dummy, we made sure he was able to be self sufficient when putting himself to sleep. But still we started having increased wakings at night. Given our experience with Max, we started to panic a little and called on Sheyne quickly to help come and assess what might be happening. We got it sorted out very easily and within a few days had a sleeping baby.

Naturally there were still the occasions when things didn't go to plan, through illness or upset to routine, but we had enough information and experience to deal with it most of the time.

I still make the odd call to Sheyne to ask her advice as its constant learning and as the saying goes, every child is different.

We thank our lucky stars we discovered what a talent Sheyne is with babies and toddlers and look on other families suffering from lack of sleep with great sympathy and understanding. Having been there, we know how dreadful it is and how it impacts the family unit.

There are answers and there is hope, so hang in there."
