Testimonials

"In the early days we got into the habit of cuddling Emma to sleep. It was suggested by our local clinic to attend a Tresillian seminar to pick up some settling tips. The techniques worked beautifully for all of three days. We followed this up with another visit to Tresillian. Emma at six weeks was beginning to display more wakefulness and would not conform to the stretched feeding. There was no flexibility in the routine for growth spurts. We persisted for two weeks until I could take it no more. We were seeing no result, and Emma was becoming very stressed. This was a very miserable time for our new family.

The nurse who was assisting us with Emma's sleep training didn't believe in babies feeling discomfort from wind and dismissed the wakefulness at the six week growth spurt. On returning to the clinic I was told not to believe everything I heard. How confusing was this for a sleep deprived mum?

I turned full circle and approached the Australian Breastfeeding Association. I was instantly relieved and comforted that we no longer had to torture our child. Emma fell into her own natural rhythm of sleeping at particular times. I'm sure my mothers group thought I was nuts as I raced away to settle Emma into bed for her sleeps.

Although we were doing reasonably well, I was concerned because we were following the advice of a lesser-known organization and it was conflicting with the clinics advice and that of Tresillian (one organization focused on feeding, the others on sleep).

Over the following months I failed to keep Emma in any particular routine. Emma wasn't eating much in the way of solids (she was pretty content with breast milk) and was beginning to wake up frequently at night. We had developed some poor sleep associations and I was too tired to even think about attempting to correct them. I couldn't contemplate the idea of controlled crying.

A member of my mothers group suggested a professional who had helped out a friend of hers. This is how we met the baby whisperer, Sheyne Rowley. Sheyne came to help when Emma was nine and a half months old and waking five times a night. Sheyne studied Emma's total sleep intake and waking times and set about drawing up a personalised routine for Emma. Sheyne was the one person to integrate feeding and sleeping to make a much needed routine.

On the first night with Sheyne, Emma slept through to 5:00 a.m. and was successfully re-settled to sleep to the appropriate 6:30 a.m. waking time. Sheyne used Emma's language cues to remind Emma that there was still some sleeping to be done. Meanwhile, I was in the next room asleep, Emma obviously wasn't upset. It was my first nights sleep in nine and a half months. Emma and I were both being sleep trained. Night two, and everybody slept until 6:30 a.m. By the end of the week Emma was sleeping well day and night.

For me it was like a holiday. Emma easily settled into the routine. She knew what to expect, as her day had been structured and was therefore very predictable. The same applied for me. During the week Sheyne gave us some helpful insight into Emma's personality and development.

We have maintained our routine since Sheyne left almost two years ago and have had no great dramas. Sheyne is always just a phone call away for when I need advice on behavioural changes, play ideas or even changing sleep times for daylight savings.

We enjoyed our time with Sheyne. Sheyne brought a sense of relief from the situation and helped us unwind. Sheyne humbly slept on our sofa bed and became an instant friend.

We unreservedly recommend Sheyne to anyone needing help in the area of sleep training. She looked after our little girl with compassion and respect. We have invited Sheyne back since the sleep training to look after Emma and she will be welcomed back with open arms for the next bub."
