Testimonials

My beautiful little man had just thrown up over his cot, and was standing in the middle of the mess red faced, angry and totally pissed at his mum (me!) for having the gall to try and get him to go to sleep. This was a familiar scene and one, which after 14 months of little sleep I was getting jack of. Alex had never learnt to put himself to sleep (my fault) I had always breast-fed him, rocked him in the chair or taken him for a long walk! He was also dependant on me as the one predictable constant in his environment, which meant I couldn't go out, go to the gym or even the toilet with out him in tow! He is my third child, with two much older siblings having its advantages and disadvantages. They are a great help entertaining him so mum could get dinner cooked but their after school activities means that Alex is pulled from pillar to post at all hours of the evening. Alexander has the most wonderful dad in the world but he works long hours so our little man was used to being up till nine or ten to see him. Little doubt we were a family in crisis!

The final straw was my husband looking at me one day and telling me that he 'wanted his wife back!' Who to go to to get help. I wasn't comfortable with the thought of going away from my home and family (Tresillian). We had tried controlled crying, which went against all my instincts, but we felt so much pressure from friends and family to "let him cry". Well cry he did... for three weeks we persisted and all that was accomplished was Alex cried longer and longer and was beginning to vomit when distressed. I searched the web having heard of the "baby whisperer" and sent off an email asking for help.

Sheyne arrived for our five-day package after a phone assessment. I could not in a million years have expected the immediate change in my little boy that occurred with the wave of Sheyne's magic wand!... Actually there is no magic wand (damn), it was hard, emotionally draining work. I am in awe of Sheyne's stamina and patience (with me!). Alex warmed to her quickly as did I and I quickly learnt what 'positive routine management' meant.

Sheyne had Alex sleeping by lunchtime on the first day with only a few minutes crying (not distressed) and the first night he went to bed at 7pm and slept till 6.30am!!! And he's still sleeping, every day, and every night since!!!. HOW??? Sheyne taught me how important it is for Alex to be able to predict his day, to stimulate his little brain and most amazingly to get him to eat. I had been battling for months at mealtime, Sheyne had him empting his bowl on the first day (and he still is)! Sheyne's approach is holistic and she addressed not just Alex and sleep but the whole big picture of Alex as a member of our family. I must add that she is also brilliant with teenagers and had the girls on behaviour charts before she left.

Sheyne had a nick name for Alex ;'chunder bag'! Alex continued to vomit on and off during the week as his way of communicating his anxiety. Sheyne showed me how to manage this and how not to reinforce this behaviour. Slowly this too is disappearing from his repertoire, it's been four days and he has not thrown up once since she left!

Sheyne didn't stop talking for the whole 5 days!! She became one of the family and we loved her company. There was so much to learn and to take in. it was the most worthwhile and valuable week and we will always be in debt to our 'Mary Poppins' - Sheyne!
