Testimonials

Sheyne saved my sanity and my relationship.

I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy Eli. However, after having contractions for four days and having labour induced as I was not dilating, Eli had a lovely subdural haematoma on his head. Only now I have connected this to the initial screaming and lack of settling. Even the midwives gave up and said he was just one of those babies who didn't sleep and are naturally unsettled.

This beginning set up a lot of habits that left me distraught, fragile and totally lacking in confidence eight months later. Eli would wake regularly throughout the night screaming. I was spending more than an hour each waking pacing our house - rocking and singing to him to get him back to sleep, or putting him on the boob only to have him wake again when I put him down. I was this miserable figure crying in the middle of the night with this child I loved but was scared of failing. He wasn't sleeping in the day either - I was lucky if he slept forty minutes.

I was so close to breaking, and so was my relationship as my amazing partner also felt lost as to how to help me or settle Eli, and I was pushing him away. This raised another issue, I had amazing support. A wonderful, patient, caring partner, my mother just down the road, amazing friends and family and still I wasn't coping ¯ I was a failure as a parent. The sense of feeling out of control and totally incompetent was overwhelming.

I had tried controlled crying - this was horrific. After following their pattern Eli was still screaming two hours after they said to pick him up. Again I had failed him.

This is when I heard on Sunrise about Sheyne's web site. I didn't even see her on TV - just heard them talking about her in the aftermath of her appearance. I looked it up as soon as I could. I had just been crying about the fact the local Child Health Centre wouldn't refer me to Riverton without me attending some meaningless workshop on feeding babies (they had to refer the client to any workshop before referral). I was desperate and they weren't responding. I was willing to attend Riverton even with my fears they weren't individualistic in their approach to babies as I had no other option other than a breakdown.

I emailed Sheyne to arrange something, anything from her. I said that I knew she couldn't do 'Package A' (Five day live-in package) given my location in Queensland. Sheyne, surprisingly and thankfully, emailed back straight away and said 'Why not?'. And that is her attitude. I had to wait a torturous month for her to come up (a lot quicker than I'd expected) and then she arrived.

She was my blond, bubbly saviour. As soon as I met her my fears she'd judge me, my house, my baby, my everything evaporated. It is so rare to find someone so free of prejudice, and so accepting of people and their strengths.

The first night and day she just slotted into our existing routine. Eli was suspicious of her and she was very respectful of his boundaries. The next day she set to work with us. This is what I loved about Sheyne's methods. She looked at our whole routine. She identified Eli's patterns and sleep cycles and set up a routine where he had active play incorporated to maximise it's effectiveness for him to earn his sleep. She set meal times to support his play and sleep, and set up naps to enhance best sleep at night. She worked out verbal cues for Jus and I to use with Eli.

Now the hard stuff (for me not Sheyne)…

She arranged for me to sleep the first three nights at my mothers down the road.

It was with trepidation I left for the first night and slept fitfully (I had grown used to waking regularly). I nervously returned home the next morning to find out my baby had not only gone the night without 'booby', my singing or my rocking, but had only put up a fight for two hours of the night, when she first put him down (something she felt was very long indeed but not surprising considering where we had come from), and then slept through the whole night. I was amazed. And when I told my mother - she refused to believe it!! I still can't believe the swift change that occurred with our baby boy.

Over the next five days, Sheyne helped me fine tune the routine and explained the purpose of it. We went toy shopping for Eli together to purchase toys best suited for his optimal development. Sheyne helped me understand the different cries Eli had and not to rescue him from expressing himself.

It was really miraculous. Eli started sleeping through the night from that very first night Sheyne was here. That is not to say he didn't and doesn't have nights, and even days, where he does wake or test us, but Sheyne was on call for us for three weeks and even now, is still available.

People were sceptical of Sheyne when I told them she was coming to help me. They are sceptical no longer and I cannot praise her enough.

I now enjoy my son. I have a lot of grief that I didn't enjoy him before Sheyne came. I grieve for the loss of the joy at having him due to sleep deprivation and lack of confidence. The love was always there, but now, there is so much more.

Thank you Sheyne.
