Testimonials

My beautiful son Jack, was always a very easy baby. He never cried much and was sleeping 10 hours a night from 3 months old. However, this wasn't the case when I was trying to get him to go to sleep. He would be hysterical and often wouldn't sleep during the day. At night he would cry for at least an hour, whilst being rocked to sleep. Nothing seemed to comfort him. I tried controlled crying (which was awful) and all the things you aren't supposed to do (rocking, feeding, being in the room with him) but none of these things worked. I read all the books and searched endlessly before coming across Sheyne. I read the other testimonials and thought they sounded too good to be true, but that is what I needed... a miracle.

When Sheyne got in contact with me, Jack was only sleeping during the day in his pram and would take over an hour to get to sleep at night; I still don't know how he stayed asleep all night. I would get comments like "at least he sleeps at night", but the days were hard work, lots of crying (or walking) and a cranky baby. I also didn't feel like a very good mum, how come all the other mothers could get their babies to sleep and I couldn't? Sheyne was my last resort, if she couldn't help me, I had decided that I would do whatever I had to do to get him to sleep (walk in pram, rocking, feeding) even though my second baby was due in 7 months.

Speaking to Sheyne on the phone was wonderful. She is such a bubbly person that you just know that all kids and babies would love her. Sheyne really understood what I was going through. Package B started with a phone call to assess eligibility. As I live in WA, we didn't have much of an option, but Sheyne had confidence that I could do it. She sent me a comprehensive manual as well as lengthy phone conversations to answer all my questions. The week leading up to the first day of the routine, I worked a lot with Jack on communication and used role plays. I was amazed at how much he understood. We would use a teddy to role play putting him to bed, and after about 3 times, Jack would start yawning and rubbing his eyes as teddy was going to sleep.

Time came to start the routine and I admit I was still very sceptical. There were two concerns. One was the routine itself - very different from what I thought he should be on, but I just had to trust in Sheyne. The second concern was that Sheyne wanted Jack to be in a leg wrap (swaddled from under the armpits and down). Jack hadn't been swaddled since 4 months. Also, he slept all night without it, and loved to move around his cot, I wondered if he really needed it, and discussed this at length with Sheyne.

We finally decided that we would try Jack without a wrap. Sheyne was on the phone with me while we put Jack to sleep for his morning nap. Jack responded very well to all the verbal cues, he knew it was time for sleep and what was going to happen and seemed really keen to go to sleep. However, he started crying. I dealt with the crying as Sheyne had instructed me. He would be almost asleep when I was in the room, but as soon as I left, would start crying. I recognised that he really wanted to go to sleep, but just needed that extra comfort. Sheyne also noted this in his cry, and told me that she really thought he needed a wrap. Then my husband mentioned something to me that I had forgotten. Jack had slept pretty well with his wrap, and most of our problems started after we took him out. We were instructed to take him out of a swaddle at 4 months when babies start to role, and it became unsafe. No one told us that you could take his arms out and still swaddle the rest. My husband also pointed out that we got him to sleep at night by rocking him and holding him tightly, this was just like a big cuddle in bed! So that was it, my husband went straight out and bought a muslin wrap and a Safe T Sleep. For the afternoon nap, Jack went straight to sleep and slept for 2 hours... NO CRYING!!! He even woke briefly then went back to sleep. Amazing! That night it took him 30 minutes to get to sleep. He cried, but was nowhere near as hysterical as before. Ever since then he has gone straight to sleep every time! I can't begin to explain the relief, and the joy. This is what I thought being a parent should be like. Christmas was 3 weeks after we started and Jack slept for the first time at another house in his porta cot. He went straight to sleep and stayed that way for 2 hours!! Sheyne gave me the best Christmas present I could have hoped for.

It took Jack about 2 weeks to adjust to the routine, and then he dropped the morning sleep. It then took another 3 weeks for him to adjust. During this time he would always go to sleep, but the length of sleep would range from 1 hour to 2.5 hours. Hence during this time, I still felt on edge and wondered if he would revert back. But he never did! I write this now that Jack is 13 months old, and he sleeps beautifully. We are going on our first family holiday, and I know it will be great! I hate to think what it would have been like without Sheyne. To think that I could have still been walking Jack in the pram, while heavily pregnant or with a newborn!! I feel for all the other mothers out there that have a baby that doesn't sleep well, and wish that there were more Sheyne's out there to help. Thank you Sheyne... words aren't enough.
