Testimonials

I always thought babies and sleep went together, like bread and butter or red wine and pasta. However, after receiving my own bundle of joy into the world, I soon discovered this was definitely not the case.

I hadn't had a lot to do with babies, maybe the occasional jiggle on my lap, or the odd coo how cute is he/she. The thought of sleep deprivation just never occurred to me.

I am a cat person. I have four cats so I (somewhat naively, sure) assumed that a baby would be something like a cat. When they are tired you just lay them down and they go blissfully off to sleep.

Well eighteen months later, and over 500 broken sleeps had passed I discovered my assumptions were a little premature. After a failed stint at Sleep School where we graduated to patting her to sleep in the cot, here we were with the most beautiful baby in the world, but a baby who refused to go to sleep unless:

  1. She had my boob in her mouth
  2. I was laying beside her
  3. We had read 10 books, had a snuggle bath and she had her farm pyjamas on

As you can imagine, I was at my wits end, my marriage was on tenderhooks, my partner was sleeping in the marital bed alone, and I was on a mattress on the floor every night in my daughters room.

So grudgingly, after many heated (read HOT) discussions with my partner, I agreed to try "control comforting" with our little cherub. We called a sleep specialist who came to our home for the evening and instructed us on the fine art of "Control comforting"

That was an experience! Have you ever seen the movie "The Exorcist"? If so, you will have an insight into our experience with control comforting with our little girl. Night after night she would scream at the top of her lungs, and it was then we discovered her hidden talent for being able to vomit at will. Linda Blair ain't got nothing on our Ruby.

After 10 days of this we decided it just wasn't healthy for her to vomit up her dinner and final breastfeed day after day, she was also moody and clingy from this experience, so we called it quits. I moved back to Ruby's room to the trusty mattress on the floor and my partner once again sprawled himself out alone on the marital bed.

It was at this time that depression kicked in. Where did we go wrong? Was the co-sleeping for the first 12 months to blame, was I a bad mother, did our daughter have ADD, was there something wrong with her, us or had we just been dealt a dish of karma from the sleep gods? (I was apparently not the world's best sleeper, and my mother resorted to Phenergan, mmm phenergan)

My partner is as optimistic as I am pessimistic, so he pulled me out of my sleep deprived hole and we did some research and found a sleep expert called Sheyne Rowley (the internet is a marvellous place)
Given our past experience you can imagine we were a little skeptical of trying something new. I really didn't believe we would find a resolution to our little girl's sleep problems, but we were desperate. Well I'm here to tell you Miracles DO happen! I can't believe I am writing this, but RUBY NOW GOES TO SLEEP ON HER OWN IN HER ROOM EVERY NIGHT WITH NO CRYING. Its true. We had to do a lot of ground work but Sheyne was right there by our sides and Ruby has graduated Sheyne's sleep program with flying colours.

Not only has Ruby's sleep improved, but Sheyne's positive routine management has impacted every area of Ruby's life. From sleeping, to eating to playing, to how my partner and I relate to her, our little cherub is truly joyful, happy, secure and with a monster appetite!

If you decide that Sheyne Rowley's positive routine management is for you, be prepared for a lot of hard work, a lot of readjustments to how you do things and a lot of soul searching. But ultimately, be prepared for success. Because if you follow her advice 100% you WILL succeed. I know, because we have been given the dubious honour of being in Sheyne's "Top 10" of the most difficult cases she has dealt with in seventeen years of baby settling and it worked for us!
