Testimonials

Lachlan was born six weeks premature and for the first 6weeks of his life he was a perfect angel. He fed every four hours, and slept in between. We couldn't have asked for a better baby, we though "this is sooo easy"… Or so we thought.

When Lachlan reached his due date everything changed!!!

At six weeks of age, we discovered Lachlan had reflux and an umbilical hernia. As a consequence, we were often up at night with Lachlan in pain. He was finally put on medication and the pain subsided, but he would no longer go to sleep by himself.

He was so used to being cuddled or breastfed to sleep, but when we would finally get to sleep, he would wake up and not know how to put himself back to sleep, and this meant that he would have to be fed to sleep again.

At 5 months of age we tried 'control crying' Lachlan. At first we tried the wait 2mins, go into him for a minute, then wait 4 mins, then 8mins and so on. This didn't seem to have any effect so we tried going in every 5mins as a routine, and this didn't work either.

We then spoke to the health nurses, and they simply said to feed him more throughout the day, but this didn't work either.

We were then advised to let him cry for 20 mins before going into him, but again no joy. Then we were told to just let him 'cry it out' (not attending to him whatsoever). Now apart from making my husband and I feel like the worse parents in the world, he didn't eventually tire himself out as anticipated. He would just cry and cry until we went into him (how anyone can let their baby continue to cry after crying for over 2hours is beyond me, so we stopped).

All this control crying simply taught Lachlan to cry harder and longer, and it also taught him to 'get worked up much quicker and screams until mummy comes in and feeds me to sleep again'.

When Lachlan was around 5 1/2 months he decided he didn't need to have any big sleep during the day anymore, he would get 20 mins here and there in the car but that was about it.

Lachlan then became so overtired, and so grumpy that something had to be done.

The last straw came when Lachlan had practically no sleep during the day, and he cried on and off from midnight until 5am the next morning. I sent an email to Sheyne asking for help, and the very next day she called me offering us a place at her half day workshop the following weekend.

At first I thought 'how are we going to afford a flight to Sydney for my husband and I', but for the future of our family we had to do what was best, and seeing the baby whisperer in Sydney was definitely something we definitely had to do.

The week before we flew to Sydney Sheyne had asked us to keep a sleep diary so she could write up a routine based on Lachlan's sleep requirements. When we arrived in Sydney we found a 60 page manual waiting for us to read. I said to my husband "why didn't we get a manual when he was born???". My husband and I spent a full day in Sydney with Sheyne, and learnt so much more than we ever imagined we would.

We came home feeling confident that this was going to work. Sheyne had allocated three days to work with us over the phone and on the first night Lachlan was asleep within an hour. The next day we had 3 sleeps during the day, and 12 hours that night and hardly even a whimper.

I could not believe the change, there was a few times when we could hardly keep Lachlan awake. Lachlan is now such a happy little 9 month old bub.

He still has 3 sleeps during the day, and sleeps 12 hours at night.

Thanks to Sheyne's language based routine we can put Lachlan to sleep anywhere, so long as we keep to the routine. Sheyne is a true life saver, and her constant support and encouragement has made us feel confident as parents.

We owe so much to Sheyne; she is so much more than just the Baby Whisperer.
