Testimonials

I am a guy of the age of 50, and my wife and I got into the family way after a great one-of-a- kind holiday in NZ in 2006.

My wife became sick some weeks later and presented me with a positive pregnancy test she had done at home. “Look at this! Look at this! I am pregnant”, she said. I was in denial about the whole statement and as thick as two bricks and a plank as most guys are about these issues. “We can’t get pregnant”, I said.

Well, the next two weeks were very quiet in our household while we were soul searching and reminiscing about child raising etc. About the third week after our big shock, we sat down and embraced the wonderful miracle that had happened to us! Only just turning 50 and having worked very hard in the past, I was ready for a touring–more relaxed–type of life style. The NZ trip had wet our appetite to wanting many more similar trips in the future. But I guess that was to change into a different type of trip!

Ok, next came the baby and afterwards back to work…same channel…same time and place. I guessed I would now be working for many more years as we needed this and that and so on. I mean having a baby is like needing a brand new collection of accessories that mount up filling up the walkways in the house. I must have this, and that looks cute, you know the story.

Getting back to the baby, he arrived 6 weeks early which also through a spanner in the works as we had not finished our redecorating. Another whoops, so to speak! We had thought, “Oh Boy! We are in for a long stay in hospital with this little one, when this little fellow surprised us all and took to breast feeding like a champion!” Everyone at the hospital was amazed considering that a baby this age shouldn’t have a sucking reflex yet. David proved them wrong, and I was a very proud father and knew we had a very strong-willed child in this little man.

Many weeks later Mum, Dad and baby were doing great, but we were gradually getting less sleep with more and more increasing demands. I thought and understood, “you can’t spoil a baby”, but I was very wrong about that statement. Baby David flinched and we were there changing, mopping up, breast feeding, cuddling, rocking and so on.

This was our ideology, and for 12 months or more we were walking zombies trying to work and drive after only having one or two hours sleep at a time. Baby David was getting more and more demanding and wanting to be breast feed or rocked and sang to sleep every time. I took to recording, “Twinkle twinkle little star” and replaying that to him, as I would go to sleep before him singing it the other way. Baby David was getting harder to please, and even though I am a musician, I thought, “I haven’t got any more performances left in me!”, and I didn’t know where I was going from there!

My wife was getting more and more stressed. She said, “I’m moving out. I’ve had enough!” I said, “I’m leaving home too!” Which only left baby David, and since he was running the house anyway, my wife and I looked at each other and said, “We need serious help here!!”

I didn’t believe in getting outside help as I thought it to be a weakness, so even though I was in pain with our dilemma, I was negative about looking for any outside help. My wife started to sift through many different websites about baby sleep routines etc, and then she came to one site that said,” The Australian Baby Whisperer”. She came to tell me about it, and I was not interested at all to be truthful.

My wife wrote to this lady and told her our story. Then, one afternoon a lady phoned and her name was Sheyne Rowley. She asked to speak to me after she spoke to my wife for almost an hour, I think. Anyway, I heard what she had to say, but was still very skeptical and said, “You’ve met your match with this child! He just doesn’t sleep much.”

Sheyne said to me, “I’ve been doing this for a long time now, and I can get your little boy sleeping at night for 11 hours straight.” At that stage, the 11 hours sleep she mentioned sounded like the grand prize win at lotto. She said, “If you could get yourselves down to Sydney this weekend and join the class, you could do the course and your baby could be sleeping 11 hours before you know it. I agreed to go as she certainly got my attention, but I was still in a negative roll. I said to my wife, “You go and I will stay and hold the fort here. I soon changed my mind as I thought, “If I don’t go she might not come back, so I went too!”

As I had no sleep the night before the flight down to Sydney, carting a baby and towing along all the accessories was very tiring. But, we did manage to get ourselves there to the Baby Whisperer. Sheyne introduced the other sleepless couples, and some of them looked as bad as me, so I settled down for nap upright in the chair. It was very hard to keep my eyes open, but Sheyne was doing her best to keep me conscious and ordering me lots of coffee to keep me awake. Even though I was nanny–napping throughout the seminar, my ears were open and I was listening. After several times of falling to sleep in my lolly tray, the coffee finally kicked in and I became more involved in the talks.

I’m not sure if it was the caffeine that finally hit the spot, or the sound of Sheyne mentioning a really nice luncheon provided to spoil us all after many months of not eating properly. But something got my attention and I was very attentive for the rest of the session. We really did hear some truths from Sheyne. One thing that hit me was that it wasn’t our baby’s fault that he couldn’t sleep. It was in fact what we had created in our own house with absolutely no rules and no routine. Baby David was getting tired running the house, and he wasn’t happy either.

After that great lunch, talks continued in the afternoon and I was very keen to hear the rest of Sheyne’s comments. It was very interesting hearing about what takes place inside a child’s mind, and what makes them feel safe and contented. Having forgotten a lot of the baby raising skills, this was a must do course. It was going to mean changing almost everything that we were doing, and at first I thought, “I’m not interested.”

Now, after six weeks of running Sheynes Rowley’s routine that she personally put together for our baby son David, he really is sleeping like a baby! David sleeps for two hours at midday and a whole 11 hours at night!

I personally thought my child was broken in the sleep department, and I challenged Sheyne to fix the problem. It was my ignorance that was the problem and once you are given the tools to use in the home, your baby will develop a hundred fold. I found Sheyne Rowley to be very genuine and kind and very committed to her work. Also, she follows through with you until you achieve a very happy situation for your child.

Every morning when my boy wakes up, I see his big beautiful smile, and I say to myself, “THANKYOU SHEYNE” and thank you God for sending her to us!
